Jane O'Brien, "Jars of dead sea creatures hold key to Gulf's future [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," BBC News, August 6, 2010 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], (accessed August 8, 2010).
While there are reports that the oil leak has been successfully contained by BP’s process of implementing mud plugs, or “hydrostatic kill,” there are teams of people who are only starting their series of research and tests for the sake of the future of Gulf sea life.
So while inquests into the adaptability of Gulf life post-oil spill commences in warehouses and laboratories on dry land, researchers must also continue to take to the Gulf waters. The collections of sea creatures housed by the Smithsonian are not simply links to the past, but also serve as a key to the future of Gulf wildlife.

Just outside of Washington the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural Historyis not only home to hundreds of exhibits and learning resources, but also in possession of a private warehouse stocked with collections of dead wildlife remains for the purposes of research. As Jane O’Brien of the BBC News in Washington reports in her August 6 article “Jars of dead sea creatures hold key to Gulf’s future,” these organisms are what scientists are planning to examine in order to delve into what long term affect the oil leak will have on current Gulf life forms.
Tracking Evolution in Creature Features
Jonathan Coddington [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the head of science and collections at the Smithsonian, explains in Jane O’Brien’s article the importance of examining particular organisms in the collection. “The ecosystem is probably best assessed by looking at the top predators, those at the top of the food chain,” Coddington contends. The giant marine isopod, or Giganteus bathynomus (pictured) is exactly the type of creature described by Coddington. The extraterrestrial-in-appearance Giganteus bathynomus ingests dead fish, but is also a natural sea hunter. Of these giant marine isopods, Coddington explains, “We’ll want to know if they’re still here, and if they are, are there as many as there were before the spill?”
Over the course of three decades, the Smithsonianhas amassed roughly half a million invertebrate samples. By studying the processes of change the jarred creatures underwent in their lifetime, scientists can better predict how current sea life in the Gulf will respond to the changes the ecosystem will face following the oil spill. And though for months experts have repeatedly announced their uncertainty as to how immense Gulf ecosystems will be affected by the spill, the Smithsonian’s invertebrate collection can clue scientists in concerning possible sea life adaptability.
