Nana is the story of two girls, both named Nana (Mika Nakashima and Aoi Miyazaki) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who become fast friends and roommates. Punk rocker Nana wants to be a successful vocalist, and on her way to Tokyo, she finds herself next to Nana, a cute and sweet girl, but always a handful, especially for a loner. Like all good films that pair up opposites [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the charisma of one eventually softens the hardness of the other, making for interesting confrontations and conversations.

A Simple Story
Two Nanas
The two lead actresses are superior choices for their respective Nanas--one embodying an abundance of energetic naivety and one a facade of detached cynicism. The story is certainly simple enough and there are no great surprises or twists. It's all about the relationship and these two girls play off each other beautifully, radiating with as much chemistry as in the original story. This is a great film for fans of the manga, or anyone who can really enjoy a cute Japanese film--there's no need to cheapen it by calling it a "chick flick"--it's better than that.
Though based on a manga, prior knowledge of the story is not needed to appreciate this touching story. Some may fault it for being saccharine [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it actually does a decent job refraining from overdoing the sweetness. The ending is very cute and definitely places it firmly in the oft-bemoaned "chick flick" category, but it's well played and the film pulls it off.
"Hachi" is the complete opposite of Nana, as she wants nothing more than to do everything she can to please her boyfriend. Sadly, he never seems as interested in returning the affection and before long, his eyes stray. The two girls support each other as Hachi discovers her boyfriend's unworthiness, and she in turn lulls Nana back home to see a Trapnest concert--with interesting results.
Punk rock Nana left Northern Japan, parting ways from the group she knew and her boyfriend Ren, who it's later learned was picked up by the mega-sensational band Trapnest. Hardly one for talking, Nana wrestles with issues of pride and love throughout the film, especially as she strives to be successful on her own. Serving as a perfect balance is the loquacious Nana ("Hachi"), who comes to Tokyo to follow her boyfriend. ("Hachi" is the name of a famous dog in Japan who loyally followed his master every day. It's a somewhat endearing nickname, but certainly implies Nana can be vaguely annoying, too.)
