There are nearly 16 million web pages that deal with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in one aspect or another. Most of the mainstream clinical definitions though [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], can be summed up by the Wikipedia description of ADHD as a neurobehavioral developmental disorder that is diagnosed primarily through symptoms of impulsiveness, hyperactivity and inattention. These symptoms typically surface prior to age 7. And as ADHD children reach adolescence and become adults, their symptoms are likely to manifest into coping mechanisms to compensate for their impairment.
There are, however, far fewer authoritative answers for the cause of what Wikipedia identifies as the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder in children. One such authority, the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) comes close. According to the NIMH, scientists are not certain what causes ADHD, however genetics most likely play a large role. Studies are also underway to investigate what role, if any, factors such as physical environment, brain injuries, sugar and food additives play in ADHD.

Dr. Weathers explains that once a child is diagnosed with a disorder [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the tendency is to blame the child or the disorder for the behavior rather than looking at how the situation itself may be causing the problems. He points out that this doesn’t mean the child isn’t helpless or blameless, but “change must rest squarely with the adults involved and how they deal with the child’s problems."
Could he be right? Today, treatment of ADHD varies by doctor and severity, however it typically involves a combination of medications, counseling, behavior modifications [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and life-style changes. The majori
According to Dr. Weathers, the seeds of ADHD are sown early on, usually through negative emotional arousal (stress). During periods of stress, a person’s emotion consumes whatever attentional resources it needs (also referred to as ‘executive function’ or ‘working memory’) and the cognitive part of the brain gets what is left over. This is called attentional depletion. Since negative emotions are stronger than positive ones, under stress the person’s attention is more greatly depleted (often along with his self control). This can be illustrated by the inability to think clearly in the heat of an argument but quite well an hour later.
Psychiatrist Lawrence Weathers, PhD., however, has a remarkably different view both in the definition and the cause. Personally overcoming ADHD himself, he believes it is not a “deficit, defect or neurological disorder,” as most commonly defined. Rather, it is a “highly refined, short-term coping skill that backfires in the long-run.” In other words, Dr. Weathers believes mainstream science has it backwards; it is the ADHD symptoms, themselves, which are learned responses (coping mechanisms) to unpleasant emotional situations.
ADHD Causes are Still Uncertain
A Different Approach to ADHD
Once attentional depletion occurs regularly, usually with a specific stressful activity such as school, family dinnertime, or weekend chores, a second process surfaces called attentional avoidance. In attentional avoidance, the child begins to postpone or altogether avoid the stressful activity. Excuses such as “I forgot my book,” or “I don’t feel well,” become commonplace. It is also possible, according to Dr. Weathers, for stress in one environment to bleed over to another environment, which may be why children from violent or chaotic homes tend to have more difficulty in school.
