Plush Dalmatian
If you have not heard of or seen the Disney film 101 Dalmatians, you are missing out on one of Disney's great pieces of work. It is due in part to this film that both the sale of plush Dalmatians and Dalmatian puppies skyrockets every time the movie is re-released. Plush Dalmatian sales are always a good thing for the plush toy industry, but the sale of puppies, not so much, given they are often abandoned to the pound when it's discovered that caring for a puppy (especially a Dalmatian) is not as easy as it seems.
For those unfamiliar with the breed, Dalmatians once ran along beside or even between the huge wheels of carriages in the 19th century. They are not a dog for a Sunday stroller simply because in their carriage days, the Dalmatian happily ran up to 30 miles a day, so it needs plenty of exercise, even by today's standards. And, as it most used to having human company, it will pine if left alone for too long which means the dog may resort to destroying things so as to get out its frustration. Sometimes a plush Dalmatian is better than no Dalmatian at all.
The 101 Dalmatians movie, was the first of its kind to use the Xerox process which meant that the animators drawings could be transferred directly to cells. Before its creation, every one of the animators drawings had to be hand traced in ink right onto a cell. With so many spotted dogs, the Xerox process sped things up considerably. Just imagine hand-inking each and every one of the 101 dogs!
101 Dalmatians cost 4 million dollars to make and when it was originally released in 1961,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it did phenomenally well. It tells the story of a Dalmatian named Pongo who sets his sights on marrying another Dalmatian named Perdita. At the same time, Pongo's owner Roger marries Perdita's mistress Anita. Perdita produces 15 Dalmatian puppies which evil Cruella De Villes plans to kidnap so she can make them into a Dalmatian fur coat. Through the adventure to escape the clutches of Cruella,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Pongo and Perdita discover 84 other dalmatian puppies that were kidnapped by Cruella. All's well that ends well as the 84 puppies are adopted by Roger and Anita and with their additional brood of 15 plus Pongo and Perdita, 101 Dalmatians is born.
The Disney franchise was re-released many times including in the years 1969, 1979,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 1985, and 1991. It then came to video in 1992. In 1996, a live-action version of the story starring Glenn Close and Jeff Daniels, was produced, and like all the re-issues before it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was extremely popular. It's no surprise that a plush dalmatian or two (or three) ended up in many a stuffed animal collection the world over.
