Many homes built on mounds and mountains were swept away by landslides. A mountainside collapsed in an village and pushed a parked passenger train and the station and countryside structures into the sea underneath. There were nearly 900 people annihilated as a result of these landslides.
This normal catastrophe, also known as the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, had a magnitude of 7.9 apt 8.4 aboard the Richter scale. The epicenter of this quake was situated south of Tokyo approach Oshima Island in Sagami Bay. Numerous aftershocks occurred with epicenters pinpointed among the beach of Sagami Bay and southern Boso Peninsula.
A tsunami was generated and waves up to 30 feet hit the shores of Oshima Island, Izu Peninsula and Boso Peninsula. Homes were flattened and flash overrunning occurred. Over 150 people died as a result of the tsunami.

Many people boarded boats in Yokohama berth in mandate to quest refuge yet they were not aware of fuel seeping into the water. As the fires spread to the berth, the oil caught fire and many ships did not make it to the open sea.
The quake also broke water chiefs which meant there was a restricted water supply for putting out the fires. Cities were depressed to rubble and ashes with the seaport of Yokohama suffering the worst break where 90% of all homes were destroyed or damaged.

In the Tokyo - Yokohama area, firestorms flamed about 381,000 of the more than 694,000 houses that were partially or completely destroyed by the earthquake. Over 1.9 million people were left homeless in Japan. In Tokyo Air Max 2003, 60% of the citys population was left homeless. The estimated damage caused by the 1923 Great Tokyo Earthquake converted to todays values would have been at least one billion U.S. greenbacks.
As a outcome of this earthquake, Japanese construction criteria for public structures were changed based on studies of buildings that remained standing. Tokyo was rebuilt with better transportation services and extra parks were created as zones of asylum.
There were lofty winds due to a typhoon striking northern Japan and this caused the fires to spread speedily and amplify into firestorms in many cities. A firestorm occurs when intense fires create their own wind system.

Oshima Island is composed of lava and volcanic rock so it didnt experience ground class alterations or extreme shaking. On the additional hand, Tokyo and Yokohama are built on softer taint deposited by rivers and with this instability; there was heavier ground shaking and damage.
According to the USGS, there were 142,800 deaths resulting from the 1923 Great Tokyo Earthquake including the firestorms, landslides and the tsunami.
The earthquake struck by 11:58 local time in Tokyo equitable when many human were preparing lunch on charcoal alternatively wood-burning stoves. During the quake cheap air max 95, numerous of these stoves toppled over and triggered bombards that could no be controlled. That is why this event is also known as the Great Tokyo Fire of 1923.
