Chairless Creator Alejandro Aravena
Alejandro is a highly respected architect who studied architecture at the Catholic University of Chile. He says while he is interested in how design evolves, he is also struck by what does not change: “It is also true that there are many things and needs that haven’t changed much since our origins, and they can still be satisfied in an extremely simple way: sitting comfortably on the ground is one of them.“
The idea for Chairless comes from the Indians of the Ayoreo tribe in northern Paraguay, who for generations have used a seat strap, which they tighten around their legs and back.
The Indians of the Gran Chaco of northern Paraguay are in a dispute with the country's government over land rights. Vitra is donating part of the proceeds from Chairless sales to support the Foundation for Paraguayan Indian Communities, an organisation dedicated to securing land for the indigenous population of Paraguay.
To address this problem [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], architect and designer Alejandro Aravena has created a wonderfully simple new device. Called Chairless, it is ideal for the modern nomad, consisting of a sturdy strap of fabric that goes around the lower body [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], holding the knees together. Normally, when people sit on the ground, they need their arms to hold their knees for support. But with the strap to take care of the knees, people’s arms are free, allowing them to read, eat, or use their computer.
Chairless is set to find fans among the music festival-going fraternity, and people who have tried it say it will prove very handy during waits at airports. Indeed the general consensus is that people should keep it their rucksack or bag at all times.
So, for anyone who travels or is out and about a lot [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and who would like a portable device to enable them to sit down on the ground in comfort, then give Chairless a try. It is inexpensive and does not take up much space in a bag.. and surely it won't be long before people wonder how they ever sat down without one.
Sitting on the grass, the beach or the floor is fine for a short while, but after 10 minutes of so it becomes hard to find a comfortable position – and people yearn for a chair.

Chairless is light and compact, it costs £19.95 and comes in four colours. It is made by Swiss furniture company Vitra and can be bought in the UK from The Conran Shop, either online or at its two shops, which are in Fulham and on Marylebone High Street, close to the West End.
Doctors also recommend the seating strap. In the UK, Dr Marco Caimi says: “Because pressure is taken off so many areas of the body, people feel relaxed all over, with their hands now free to operate a laptop or iPod, read a book or eat.’
