Reminiscent of Hauer’s previous role on the other side of the law as Roy in Blade Runner (1986) this vision of the future is gorgeously portrayed in dark hues and slick surfaces. The stylized lighting plays a significant part in showing how dismal and dank are the dirty and dark places where evil dwells. Stone encounters Michelle (played by a young Kim Katrall) who soon becomes a target of the creature’s wrath. Things come to a head when the killer attacks Stone and Michelle at his own apartment. The search starts to become even stranger when the police forensics lab turns up some grisly results.
Though made in the early 90’s, Split Second takes a nihilistic look at the outcome of decades of global warming with London being submerged in dreary rain covered streets, the population beset upon by rodents, and a generally filthy swampy life. Wet and dirty, the police use swamp boats to transport prisoners in a futuristic view of what we have to look forward to in years to come.
Hard-boiled Detective Harley Stone (Rutger Hauer) races through the water drenched streets of 2008’s London, through the seedy underground trying to track down the serial killing psychopath that killed his partner. A young girl screams in the dark. The decimated remains of a young club slut taunt Harley when he arrives a split second too late to stop the killer. A sign on the bathroom mirror in the victim’s blood reads: “I’m Back” This is not the first time this bloody cat and mouse game of death has been played out, but it’s certainly going to be the last.
Stone seems to have a sixth sense for sensing the killer and knowing where he is before he's about to strike. Everyone thinks that Harley is a paranoid delusional so the Chief of Police assigns Fresh faced psychopath expert Dick Durkin (Alistair Duncan) to be Detective Harley’s unwilling partner. As the clues start to jumble together into zodiac symbols, taunting clues, and bloody deliveries, it’s clear that this cat and mouse game will be drenched in blood. What’s unclear is whether Harley Stone is the cat or the mouse.
The science fiction of this piece is best when looked at from a prophetic realm of nearly two decades ago. Its grim vision of the future is even scarier when compared with those same environmental news stories that declare this vision of the future is not to far from reality. Quality and effort is what makes low budget Split Second one of the best sci-fi/thrillers that has ever graced the genre!
In short this is the type of movie that separates itself from the rest by taking its elements and combining them to their greatest effect. Movies of this caliber are difficult to call B-movies because they are extremely efficient [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the sets [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], actors, plot, special effects and overall tone are what many big budget caliber movies strive to be. It falls short in several story elements and towards the end its same one-liners and silly comedy become a little forced and stale, but the action keeps the story humming right along.
