Rachel Comey might be a New York-based indie designer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but her schoolmarm look is decided European.
Whether it’s because of the limited-quantity fabrics she uses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or the odd-yet-refined silhouettes she prefers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Comey’s collection sits more comfortably alongside Vanessa Bruno and Isabel Marant than it does her American peers.
This theory rang true at yesterday’s runway show,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where Comey showed matchy-matchy tops and bottoms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], matchy-matchy bottoms and shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and baby-bell high water pants that are sure to set the tone for autumn. We were particularly drawn to her brownish rose corduroy swing skirt cut on a bias,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], matched with a corduroy blazer. Even Comey’s version of the Catholic school girl uniform comes off as more “teacher” than “student.”
One of the final looks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a one-shoulder velvet dress that appeared to be as comfortable as it did elegant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is sure to show up on the red carpet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a place that’s new to Comey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but has welcomed her warmly.
Because it’s Comey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her stars will never look like fashion plates. Like the most beloved contemporary European designers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her clothes are less about the trends and more about women.
