Hercules is left abandoned and mortal until an elderly couple finds him and raises him as their own. In a quest to find where he belongs, Hercules, as a young adult, visits the Temple of Zeus where Zeus animates the statue and tells Hercules that he is his father. He tells Hercules that in order to reclaim his place on Olympus, he must prove himself a hero. He gives Hercules the winged horse, Pegasus, and sends him to Philoctetes, trainer of heroes.

The actual Hercules myth goes quite differently. Hercules (or Heracles) is born to Zeus and a mortal woman. Hera, Zeus’s wife and sister, becomes extremely jealous of Zeus’s affair and drives Hercules insane—so much so that he kills his wife, Megara, and children.
While Hercules is weakened, Hades unleashes the Titans who subsequently overcome Mount Olympus. When Meg is accidentally injured, Hercules’s strength returns, and he thwarts Hades’ plans. Meg passes into the afterlife, and Hercules offers his own soul to Hades in return for Meg’s. Hades accepts, and Hercules dives into the river of souls, but as he swims deeper, he becomes frailer, nearing death. As the Fates are about to cut Hercules’s thread of life, he grabs hold of Meg’s soul. The Fates try to cut through the thread, but it turns gold, and their scissors will not cut it. Hercules finally proves himself a hero and regains his immortality. He saves Meg and turns down a home on Olympus for a life on Earth with a mortal.

Hercules is only one of a number of Disney's animated films that is adapted from a much older, much darker story. The Greeks and Romans told tales of the great strong-man Heracles (or Hercules). He killed the Hydra, released Prometheus from his chains, and tricked the Titan Atlas. He slept with men and women alike, and was the bastard child of his cheating father. Disney, on the other hand, told of a muscle-bound, bone-brained, celebrated hero with his own line of merchandice who was tricked into giving up the only thing he had going for him for a girl.
In Disney’s version of the Hercules myth, Hercules is kidnapped, turned mortal, and must fight to regain his birthright of godship. Hades, Hercules’ uncle, feels betrayed because he was given the task of ruling the Underworld and watching over the dead while his brothers, Zeus and Poseidon [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], have free reign on Mount Olympus. In order to get revenge, Hades consults the Fates—the sisters who control the destiny of men—to find out when the most opportune time would be for him to act. The Fates tell him that when the planets align, he will be able to release the Titans and defeat the gods of Olympus. They warn him that one god will stand in his way: Hercules, the son of Zeus and Hera. So, in order to avoid this hitch, Hades sends his minions, Pain and Panic, to kill Hercules. Pain and Panic kidnap baby Hercules [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], poison him, but are overcome by his abnormal strength and ultimately fail in their mission.
Shortly into Hercules’ training, he fights the centaur [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nessus, to save a damsel in distress, Megara (Meg). Throughout the rest of his training, Hercules defeats the multi-headed Hydra and several other monsters. Hades discovers that Hercules is not, in fact, dead as he was led to believe and uses Meg to discover Hercules’s weakness. When no weakness is found, Hades realizes that Meg is the key to Hercules’s downfall. Hercules makes a deal with Hades that if Hercules gives up his strength for twenty-four hours, no harm will fall on Meg.
