How much sport do you do? Dancing, perhaps? What are your eating habits like? Have you been dieting, losing weight? Are you on any medication? If you are extremely physically active, especially if you have a very low body weight, that will result in your periods stopping, or being delayed in starting.
Is pain a problem with your periods? Some women and teenage girls never know what it’s like to experience a period pain. However, for the many who do have period cramps [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they can be debilitating. Teenage girls are amongst those who have period cramps, or dysmenorrhoea. Do you have to take time off school because of it? Is it every month? How long does it last? At what stage of your period does it occur? Are you tired and needing to sleep a lot of the time?
On examination, it is important to note the presence or absence of development of secondary sexual characteristics for your age (that is, breast development and pubic hair growth). In other words, are your hormones at least starting to kick in [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even if they haven’t yet got you to the point of menarche? If nothing whatever is happening, and you’re 16 years old, then it’s time for you to see an endocrinologist and have a ful
In my experience as a general practitioner, one of the frequent problems I encountered was that of teenage girls with concerns about their periods. In this article I would like to address you girls on some these issues. Some of these concerns are about serious problems, but most often you will find yourself happily reassured that all is well.

Have you got a boyfriend? Are you sexually active? Have you got any vaginal discharge? Are you using any contraception? And if so, what? I know it’s uncomfortable answering some of these questions, but they are important and relevant. If you are sexually active, there is always the possibility of a pregnancy, and its complications, as well as sexually transmitted diseases (STD's), which may result in changes to your anticipated menstrual cycle.
We need to consider a few aspects of what has been happening with your periods. First of all, how old were you when you actually started your periods? That is known is the menarche. What have your periods been like since then? Has there been a recent change? Or have they been fairly constant in their behaviour since they began? If this is only (for example) your third period ever, and it’s taken six to nine months for those to happen, then that is relevant. Perhaps you are 15 years old, you haven’t started your periods yet [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and all your friends at school have - you may be getting worried that there is something seriously wrong with you.
Taking a Menstrual History
How heavily do you bleed with your periods? With this question, keep in mind that a little blood goes a long way. By this, I mean that it takes a very small amount to look dramatic. The average total blood loss for a whole normal period is about 30 to 40 ml. That really is not a great deal. In someone who has heavy periods lasting about ten days, they might lose a total of 80 ml. So a useful guide can be to ask yourself how often do you need to change soaked (and I do mean “soaked”) tampons or pads daily? Do you need to change bedding because it gets bloodied? Are you passing big clots?
How regular are your periods? Do you have a predictable four-week (28 day) cycle? Or is it predictable, but more like every five weeks? Or do you really have no idea when to expect a period, and have to carry sanitary protection with you all the time "just in case"?
