People who are promoted to a managerial position often are overwhelmed by the responsibilities. They find themselves in new territory. They get dis-oriented and eventually can become discouraged.
About 40-60% of people who are promoted into supervisory or manager positions, fail with 9 months. It doesn't have to be that way.
Keeping a few things in mind and doing some key actions will prevent a new appointed manager from becoming a statistic.
1. Get clear on "The Deal."
Basically what does the company offer you as a new manager, what do they expect and how long is the "honeymoon" period.
Find out from your boss what behaviours s/he wants to see you doing that will tell her you are doing a good job.
Explore with her/him what the boundaries are -- what's acceptable and what is not OK.
Within 60 days give your boss some plans about how you intend to work with your direct reports to help them.
2. Negotiate the top three priorities for each of people and processes in your area.
Getting clear on the priorities in the two areas -- people and processes -- addresses two issues.
Given the list of tasks that need to be done, you will require input from your boss to help you to prioritize them. This will set the scene for developing a good working relationship with him or her. She can be a useful resource for you in the first 6-9 months.
S/he is probably busy and may try to put you off. Do not accept that. Her job is to help you to get up and running ASAP.
If you do not persist and let it go you will be the one who is axed if you "don't work out."
As my high school principal used to say,Dooney&Bourke wallet, "A word to the wise should be sufficient."
3. Find the key to your long-term success:
How does what I'm doing fit in to the bigger picture?
You then need to communicate that to all members of your group.
When I was in your shoes I did coffee with some of the key "old salt" mangers to get a clue as to what was the big picture. I picked the ones that were in the know and seen as the "movers and shakers" in the business. One of them took me under his wing, which was very helpful to me.
4. Find out what resources you need. Which ones are you likely to get?
Get clarity on the resources needed to initiate,Dunk low women, move along and complete tasks. Assume you can get them.
In most companies only what it is asked for, is given. Weird but true. I think it's a guy thing. Use your connections to get what you need.
5. Accept that something will go wrong.
Be prepared for it.
Also be prepared to be -- at worst, blamed -- at best, held accountable. Welcome to the world of being a manager.
As they say,Gucci bikini, tongue-in-cheek, "that's what we get the big bucks for."
However it goes, use the screw-ups as opportunities to shine and solve problems while helping your team improve their performance. When you do this you will gain the respect of the more seasoned managers. Then it is more likely (there is no guarantee) that they will step forward to help you.
The ones that kick you when you are down, are the ones to keep an eye out for.
You can learn a lot about what not to do from these people.
And as my favourite mentor used to say to me,Air max 180 for women,
"Remember to have fun out there,Afflictionclo hoody, Jim."
