Vanilla Fudge
Procol Harum
Songs like the lushly arranged "A Whiter Shade of Pale" are considered by many to be progressive rock. There are others who point to some of their more pure rock and pop music and say the group wasn't progressive rock. Certainly their rise to fame in 1967 was contemporary to the Beatles' first reputed entry into prog rock. Procol Harum is another that (whether you consider them to be prog or not) were influential on early progressive rock.
Pink Floyd
Many progressive rock historians will point to the Beatles, and more specifically the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" as the first progressive rock release. Certainly the disc challenged the idea of all songs needing a certain structure to work. It also stretched the boundaries of rock music. It was a concept album. All of these elements are common in progressive rock. It was (as were the Beatles in general), very influential in terms of turning the heads of many of the musicians who would become the core of the progressive rock movement. For that reason, the argument is a strong one.
A great deal of disagreement surrounds Pink Floyd in terms of whether or not they qualify as progressive rock. Certainly the early era of the band (led by Syd Barrett), like their 1967 debut release "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is very psychedelic, but it also might be considered progressive rock.
Depending on your definition, groups like Dream Theater, Marillion and even Muse and Radiohead fly the banner of progressive rock in modern times. The boundaries of the genre are largely dependent on the individual music fan or journalist. For that reason, progressive rock's origins also come into question frequently. There are some trends that can be pinpointed that were definitely involved in the start of progressive rock, though.
While The Moody Blues got their start as an R & B and blues outfit who had some success with a single release called "Go Now," their 1967 album "Days of the Future Passed" changed everything. It shared the concept album premise with The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album

, but the symphonic elements really made the Moody Blues disc stand out. This music did a great job of bridging the gap between classical music and rock. It is certainly another entry into the "this could be the first prog rock album" category.
The Nice are probably best known now as the band that Keith Emerson was in before Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Those who consider the acts mentioned previously as not making the cut into progressive rock

, though, might well point to the Nice as the first real prog outfit. Certainly, they did a great job of combining classical music, jazz and rock in way that created something new and challenging. In many ways they sounded like that other band that Emerson would be known for. Their first disc was released in 1968

, so if you subscribe to The Nice as first prog band theory, that would be the origin po
The Beatles
Vanilla Fudge might be considered more jam band than progressive rock. They liked to take popular songs of the day and shift them into more artful, extended pieces of music. Vanilla Fudge also introduced a lot of the keyboard elements and classical arrangements that were common in progressive rock. Really, they fit into psychedelia at times, jam band territory at other points, prog a lot of the time and were nearly metal on some songs.
